The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a tax identification number required for almost any official activity in Spain — from opening a bank account to signing a work contract or studying at university.
Which NIE do you need?
EU Citizen NIE
For EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens living or studying in Spain.
Form: EX-18
Non-EU NIE
For non-EU citizens who need a NIE but are not applying for residency.
Form: EX-15
Student TIE
For non-EU students on a student visa. Combines residency and NIE.
